History and Evolution :In January 2017 the Cabinet had decided to set up an Institute of Excellence to commemorate the Intellectual legacy of Dr. B R Ambedkar.The Bengaluru Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics is registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act of 1960 (Act No. 17 of 1960).Hon. President Pranab Mukherjee on 14th April 2017 laid the foundation stone for the Dr B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics in the Bengaluru University campus on the 126th birth anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution. Dr. Anup K. Pujari (IAS retired) is the special officer of the School thus established. The Dr B R Ambedkar School of Economics, modeled on the London School of Economics, will begin classes from the upcoming academic year (2017-18) at the Jnana Bharathi campus of Bangalore University. The Cabinet had allocated 43 acres of land for the purpose. The Karnataka government has sanctioned Rs 150 crore for setting up the school’s first phase, with an administrative block, student hostels, auditorium, three seminar halls and quarters for the faculty. The state government intends to run the School as an autonomous institution of international standard.

Bengaluru has several institutions of higher learning which are among the best in the country in their respective fields. Special mention must be made of IISc, IIM, NLSIU, ISRO, JNCASR, NCBC, etc. However, an institution in the discipline of economics & allied subjects was the need of the hour. This lacuna is being sought to be addressed with the establishment of Bengaluru Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics.

Accordingly, the Government of Karnataka constituted a committee of experts under the chairmanship of Shri. S. V. Ranganath, Vice Chairman, KSHEC & former Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka. Based on the recommendation of this committee, the Government of Karnataka & Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah approved the establishment of this institution at a total cost of Rs 350 crores, Rs 275 crores from government funding and Rs 75 crores from corporate sources & released Rs 107 crores in the financial year 2016-17. The Government of Karnataka has allotted 43.45 acres of land In the Jnana Bharathi Campus of Bangalore University for the establishment of the institute.

Bengaluru Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics (B.A.S.E) is registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 (Act No. 17 of 1960). The foundation stone of BASE was laid by Honourable President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee on 14th April, 2017, in the Banquet Hall, Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution.

B.A.S.E is being modelled on the lines of the celebrated London School of Economics. The first batch of B.Sc. (Honours) Economics was admitted in June-July 2017, through an All India Entrance test conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), Government of Karnataka, Bengaluru and the classes for this pioneer batch began from 28th August 2017, at the Department of Visual Arts, Bangalore University, Jnana Bharathi campus, Bengaluru.  The Academic session of the B.A.S.E was inaugurated at Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan by Honourable former Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh,  world reknowned Economist on 4t October 2017. The programme was chaired by the Hon. Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri Siddaramaiahji and Hon. Minister for Higher Education Shri Basavaraj Rayareddy was the Guest of Honour. The programme was attended by a galaxy of Ministers of the Government of Karnataka and many dignitaries from Bangalore.

Dr. Manmohan Singh gave some very important advice to the students. and the Key Note Speaker of this occasion was Dr. C Rangarajan, former Governor of Reserve Bank of India and the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council. He spoke about the current economic situation and the future of Indian economy.

School of Excellence (B.A.S.E) BASE will make its presence felt in the country as one of the finest training institutions in Economics and compete with the best in the country. BASE will not only set a new model in teaching and research in economics but shall also assist the Government of Karnataka and Union Government of India in policy formulations, to inform them through research the effectiveness of the policies. BASE would focus on imparting holistic knowledge in the discipline of economics by providing an understanding of other social sciences disciplines such as, political sciences, sociology, philosophy, ethics etc.The teaching and training will focus on freedom to think and allow freely the new currents in economics and allied social sciences. Cafeteria approach will be followed and the learners shall have a choice to choose unusual combinations like – Experimental Economics with Marxian Economics or such things. The dogmatism in framing of the syllabus, the orthodox course material, will be given a go bye.
